The Construction Skills Certification Program is the foundation of the construction sector. Since its inception, the program has kept pace with the ongoing demands of this vital sector. To date, more than two million CSCS cards have been issued. A CSCS cardholder is qualified for the skill and type of work they perform within that card category. A database of those working in the construction sector who hold the certification exists.
Most contractors and construction companies require their workers to obtain a CSCS card to prove their qualifications and professional training. This card provides proof that you are qualified in the specialty indicated on the card and the type of work assigned to you. There is a database containing the names of all construction sector workers and their recognized qualifications.
Having a CSCS card serves as proof of identity, demonstrating your qualifications and skills to employers on the construction site. On construction sites, the accuracy of information can be verified, so it’s important to have a card that’s appropriate for the job you’ll be performing. Having the wrong or inappropriate card can result in you being denied entry to the construction site and prevent you from working.
Health and Safety Requirements
All applicants for new or renewal health and safety cards must pass a knowledge test within two years of applying for a card. This test is designed to assess an individual’s knowledge on a wide range of health and safety topics.
The Application Process
There are two ways to apply for a CSCS card: either an individual application or an application submitted by your employer. Individual applicants can contact a CSCS office or download the application form from the website. Employers can apply online on behalf of their employees. The cost of applying for a CSCS card is £36, while the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) card costs £21. Applicants should also search online for information to determine the correct card for their business and the required HSE test for their occupation.
Smart Technology
The CSCS card is a smart card with an integrated electronic chip embedded in its core component. This enables verification of the cardholder and that all site employees hold a valid CSCS card. The card displays the expiration date and indicates their eligibility for the job they perform based on the card data. Card data can be verified within seconds. The smart card aims to:
- Remove error/fake card holders receiving access to the site.
- Portable means to provide evidence of skills and training.
- Effective card control method – Manually reduces the time for employees examining the card and performing data introduction.
- Access control.
- Training log.
- In time/out the log.
